Digging a little deeper

On a frigid Monday evening in January at B.B. King's Blues Club in New York, the celebration was swinging to a somewhat atypical sound. Instead of blues, it was bluegrass -- specifically, the harmony-rich, gospel-infused music of Doyle Lawson.
The mandolinist is the first to admit he was a long way from home that night. Also, the dead of winter was normally a time he and his band, Quicksilver, enjoyed some respite from the road.
But an opportunity presented itself.
"New York City on a Monday night," said Lawson, 61, as if the job offer seemed as unlikely now as it had in January. "We didn't know what we were in for. But it was a good night, the crowd responded, and we blew their socks off. We had a chance to get to them and we did. In a big way."
