Two time Emmy Award Winner and Jimi Hendrix documentary filmmaker and promoter David Kramer returns to BB King's Blues Club & Grill to present his annual Jimi Hendrix Birthday Tribute Concert for the 10th year. It promises to be a very special one, as Hendrix was experimenting with several jazz musicians such as Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Larry Young, John McLaughlin and Rahsaan Roland Kirk late in his brief career, this year we explore the possibilities with some pioneers of Jazz Rock Fusion.
This year's lineup of performers includes:
LARRY CORYELL'S ELEVENTH HOUSE
Featuring the original lineup of Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, Randy Brecker, Mike Mandel & John Lee. Coryell's late night jams with Jimi Hendrix in the late1960's was perhaps the beginning of Jazz Rock Fusion that he helped pioneer! The Eleventh House (formed in 1973) is one of the main Jazzfusion acts of the era. The bands music blends funky, groove oriented rhythms, rock oriented electric guitar and synth with intellectual chord progressions and jazz improvisations. Coryell's hard edged cutting tone, phrasing and note bending owes as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier, smooth bop influences. Yet as a true eclectic armed with a brilliant technique, he covers all the bases from the most decibel heavy, distortion laden electric work to the most delicate, soothing, intricate lines of an acoustic guitar. This band can blow minds!
Nicknamed "Prince of Harlem" saxophonist & bandleader best known for his work with Hendrix, and performing with Curtis Knight & the Squires along with Jimi Hendrix and Harry Jensen on guitar. He has also backed James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Ben E. King, Sam & Dave and other soul greats. He recorded in the early '60's with Jimi Hendrix as well as the late '60's with Jimi Hendrix at his peak. Many of these late '60's recordings have yet to be released... Mr. Youngblood is full of surprises!
A fine guitarist in his own right, Harry played in Curtis Knight's Squires with Hendrix, and later in the King Curtis Band as the great Cornell Dupree's replacement! He also played guitar for Don Covay, Jimmy Castor and a host of other r&b greats.
P-FUNK ALLSTAR & ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME Inductee, nicknamed "Kidd Funkadelic" joined P-Funk in 1975 when he was just 17. Michael brings the FUNK! His fuzzy, Hendrix inspired licks and wailing harmonics will psychedelicize you!
PATRICK STANFIELD JONES
From Teaneck, NJ, growing up neighbors with the Isley Brothers. He is a musicians musician. Patrick can do it all, a multi instrumentalist who can sing, write, produce, arrange and play his ass off! He has played guitar with the Isley Bros. and Buddy Miles, as did Hendrix himself.
The musical Director for the evening has recorded with Miles Davis, performed with members of P-Funk, Vernon Reid, Bobby Womack, Don Covay, the Ghetto Fighters, Buddy Miles, Frank Marino, etc. He presently tours with Burnt Sugar.
Florida based guitarist has been playing Hendrix and Hendrix inspired music since the seventies, he is one of the best in the business when it comes to Hendrix!
Grammy nominated guitar virtuoso has graced the BB King stage numerous times with people like Joe Cocker, Dr. John, and Cornell Dupree as well as his own band. He has toured as a side man with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Bobby Caldwell, Dianne Schuur, Toni Braxton, etc.
DUCKS CAN GROOVE
Direct from Sweden, this band always does justice to the Hendrix catalogue. Lead guitarist Stefan Edfeldt's Hendrix drenched solos lean toward the direction Hendrix was headed in 1970 with a funky jazz rock fusion as exemplified in their last three CD's of original material. The Ducks once again are the house band for the evening.
Nashville guitarist has played on & off with Billy Cox (Band of Gypsies) for nearly 30 years. He was also the guitarist of The Gypsy Sun Experience with original JHE drummer Mitch Mitchel & Billy Cox. Need we say more!
