One of R&B's preeminent love men during the '90s heyday of hip-hop soul, Ginuwine first emerged in 1996 with the multi-platinum disc The Bachelor, produced with superstar beatmaker Timbaland. Featuring what one critic called "silky, seductive vocals [purring] beside Timbaland's jagged, hyperkinetic beats to create a uniquely edgy R&B sound," the album became an instant classic, with "Pony," the daring first single, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart late in 1996. Other standout cuts from the disc included "Tell Me Do U Wanna" and a blazing cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry." "When Timbaland and I did The Bachelor, that was one of the biggest moments in my life," Ginuwine recalls. "Not everyone has the opportunity to be so popular with their first release. Believe me, I know I was blessed."

While some folks might have written off Ginuwine as just another pretty boy destined to be a fad, he proved the naysayers wrong when he returned with the brilliant sophomore project 100% Ginuwine (1999). Featuring the hits "So Anxious," "What's So Different," "Same Ol' G," and "None of Ur Friends Business," the Double-Platinum smash prompted critic Matt Diehl to declare the disc "a sensual peek into a futuristic bachelor boudoir of soul." The disc was named the Best R&B/Soul Album at the 2000 Soul Train Music Awards, and Ginuwine was nominated for an American Music Award in the Favorite Male R&B artist category in 2000, 2002, and 2003. His new millenium releases The Life (2001), The Senior (2003), and Back II da Basics (2005) enjoyed warm critical reception as well.

After a four-year recording hiatus from the music world in the late '00s, Ginuwine returned to the forefront of the music world with the release of his sixth disc, A Man's Thoughts (2009). Featuring the singles "Last Chance," "Get Involved," and "Trouble," the disc made it abundantly clear that the R&B icon had lost none of the soulful prowess that first made him a star more than a decade earlier. That mastery is again on full display on Ginuwine's latest album Elgin, released on Valentine's Day last year and featuring singles like "What Could Have Been," "Heaven," "Body," and "Drink of Choice." Having debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard 200, the disc will surely go down in history as one of R&B's more perfect moments.
