In among the most enviable careers in music, bassist Marcus Miller is a two-time Grammy Award winner and the composer and producer of 10 critically acclaimed and genre-defying albums (seven studio and three live). His resume as a sideman boasts over 500 recording credits on albums across the spectrum of musical styles: rock (Donald Fagen and Eric Clapton), jazz (George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter, and Grover Washington Jr.), pop (Roberta Flack, Paul Simon, and Mariah Carey), R&B (Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan), hip-hop (Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg), blues (Z.Z. Hill), new wave (Billy Idol), smooth jazz (Al Jarreau and Dave Koz), and opera (Kenn Hicks and Kathleen Battle). He was also among the last primary collaborators with Miles Davis, laid the foundation for contemporary jazz with David Sanborn in the early '80s, and collaborated extensively with the late, great soul man Luther Vandross, contributing to well over half his albums as a producer, composer, and/or player.

Style, soul, and intense professionalism have set Miller at the top of the music game for three decades now. Growing up in a musical family, he was proficient on clarinet, piano, and bass by age 13. Two years later, he was working regularly in New York City, quickly becoming a top-call session musician. After two R&B-leaning solo albums for Warner Bros. in the '80s followed by co-leading The Jamaica Boys (with drummer Lenny White and singer Mark Stevens), Miller took a hiatus from his solo career before returning rejuvenated with the galvanizing The Sun Don't Lie (1993) and Tales (1995), both of which found him brilliantly connecting the dots of Black music's evolution. Following the fan-demanded Live and More in 1997, Miller released the Grammy-winning M2 ("M-Squared") on his own 3 Deuces Records label. A second double live CD, The Ozell Tapes: The Official Bootleg (2003), came next, followed by Silver Rain (2005), Free (2007), and Marcus (2008).

In recent years, Miller has co-led the all-star bass trio S.M.V. with Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten and the funk-jazz collaboration D.M.S. with George Duke and David Sanborn, spearheaded the Tutu Revisited project (a return to the music of his days with Miles Davis), performed live with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, and co-produced albums for George Benson and Dave Koz. His latest solo effort Renaissance, released this May, is fittingly titled as the latest work from an artist who is truly a musical Renaissance man.
