Rik Emmett first gained international notoriety as the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist with Canadian hard rock power trio Triumph, which reached the height of its U.S. popularity in the late '70s and early '80s. Four Gold and Platinum-selling decades in the music business have provided him entry into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame, the Music Industry Hall of Fame, and the Junos Hall of Fame, with a few Best Guitarist awards in various categories garnered along the way.
After his incredibly successful run with Triumph, Emmett left the band in 1988 to pursue a solo career, releasing three solo albums for Duke Street/MCA Records in the early '90s. The first, Absolutely (1990), went Gold, yielding the hits "Saved by Love" and "Big Lie." Ipso Facto followed in 1992, and 1995 saw him expand his stylistic palate even further with the singer-songwriter album Spiral Notebook. In 1996, Emmett began fully testing the strength of his musical convictions, with work in his own digital studio and through his own independent record label. His renegade instincts paid off artistically with efforts like Swing Shift (1997), featuring elements of swing and fusion, and Raw Quartet (1999), which revealed Emmett's passion and natural affinity for the blues.
The last decade has found Emmett continuing to break new artistic ground with fresh tours and innovative recordings. A smooth jazz duo project with Dave Dunlop called Strung-Out Troubadours (2006) won both Duo of the Year and Album of the Year honors at the 2007 Canadian Smooth jazz Awards. That same year, Emmett released a prog rock project titled Airtime. 2009 also saw him record with his P.R.O. Trio (featuring Pavlo and Oscar Lopez), creating a unique blend of his favorite acoustic styles within Mediterranean and Latin contexts. His latest release, reCOVERy Room 9 (2011), is another acoustic duo with Dunlop, a set of covers of a wildly disparate group of pop songs. Continuing his commitment to prolific and conscientious music-making with no less than three new solo releases slated for 2012, Emmett remains as innovative and productive as ever.
